Incident Report / Actions Taken by Team Members

On 01/06/2025, at approximately 1920 hours, I was notified of a possible fight that occurred inside the Live venue during an 8th grade boys’ game. Leaders had three subjects outside, two of which were involved in the fight and a witness. I first spoke to Kavika Maldonado who told me he was hit with a dodge ball in the head and Robert “JJ” Lopez was laughing at him. Maldonado told Lopez it was not that funny, and Lopez became angry, pushing Maldonado. Maldonado pushed Lopez back and Lopez started throwing punches and kicks striking Maldonado several times in the face, head and side of his leg. Maldonado said Lopez knocked his glasses on his face and picked them up from the ground, breaking them in his hand. Maldonado showed me a pair of broken glasses that he said were very expensive.

I noticed Maldonado had an abrasion and bruising to the bridge of his nose as well as redness and swelling to his left ear. I later provided Maldonado with an ice pack for his ear. Maldonado did not require any medical treatment.

After speaking to Maldonado, I spoke to Cannon Valetta, a witness. Valletta’s account was very similar except he did not see Lopez grab the glasses from the ground and break them. Valetta added that several weeks prior, he was also assaulted by Lopez during a game where the students hit each other with pool noodles during a game of tag. Valetta hit Lopez with the noodle which angered Lopez. Lopez swung several punches at Valetta before calming down. Valetta was struck in the face with one punch but did not report the incident.

Next, I spoke to Lopez. Lopez told me he was laughing at Maldonado for getting hit in the head with the ball, but did not think laughing was a big deal. He said Maldonado got into his face in which Lopez put his arm out to gain distance but did not push Maldonado. Lopez claimed Maldonado pushed him first, so he started punching Maldonado. Lopez denied breaking Maldonado’s glasses on the floor and said if he broke them, it was from Lopez punching Maldonado in the face while wearing them.

After speaking to those involved, I went to review the video of the incident. The video does not capture audio and due to lighting and crowds it is hard to determine exactly what occurred. It does appear the Maldonado and Lopez get into each other’s faces. The pushing seems almost simultaneously, and Lopez begins punching Maldonado almost immediately after the first push. Maldonado does however appear to punch back with no success. The fight is broken up quickly by onlookers. It is very clear however that Lopez did not pick up Maldonado’s glasses from the ground and break them in his hands like reported. It is likely the glasses broke from getting stepped on in the crowd.

After getting a better idea of the incident, I contacted Kavika’s mother Kayla. I told Kayla the information I was aware of and that her son, although had some redness and bruising did not appear to be seriously injured. Kayla believed the incident was likely just boys being boys and did not wish to push any type of further issue and did not mind that the glasses had been broken.

I provided this information to Junior High Pastor Gordin Nixon, and we discussed how he would like to handle Lopez. Nixon and I agreed that he would handle contacting his parents and any punishment that might come. I agreed to provide Nixon with a report and the video footage in the coming days. The video will also be saved in the Safety folder.
