Incident Report / Actions Taken by Team Members

On Thursday, December 19, 2024, I met with 9/10 Pastor Hayden Feindel reference an incident that occurred during the Wednesday evening youth service at the Vista campus. The 9/10 Youth Group meets Wednesday nights from 6:30 – 9 pm. Hayden told me the following:

On Wednesday, Dec 18th, at 7:50 pm, Youth Leader Dorian Yocum told Hayden of a possible fight between two students. It was later determined that two students had agreed to “slap box”in the Men’s restroom, next to the Family Room. Slap boxing is a type of physical encounter that simulates boxing, but each person uses open hands rather than a closed fist. The two students were identified as David Martin (15 yrs) and Rowan (RT) Phillips (15 yrs). A few other students were also inside the bathroom to watch the slap box and student James Wirkkala (14 yrs) recorded the video on his cell phone. After the incident, James sent the video to other students attending the youth service.

Hayden located both students and spoke to them individually. David told Hayden it was just a “slap box”, and not a big deal. David was angry that Hayden was making an issue of it and initially refused to provide his grandparents contact information. Hayden spoke to RT about the slap fight, and he acknowledged they shouldn’t have done it.

According to Hayden, both teens had agreed to go into the bathroom to slap box. Afterwards, they were seen hanging out and talking to each other. David sustained a minor bruise on his chin from the incident.

Hayden contacted RT’s mother Melina Phillips (619) 920-6668 and David’s grandmother Lisa Martin (760) 402-9096 and notified them of the incident.
