Incident Report / Actions Taken by Team Members

Mark approached the children’s check in area about 1100 am asking whether his kids were in day care or not. Alisa brought it to Jessi who called safety, who also spoke to Lindsay and Russ.

Mark & Kevin from safety pulled Mark into an empty children’s room to chat in privacy. Mark claimed his ex-wife was a no-show on court appearances and hiding his kids from him. He claimed he was considering an abduction case against his ex-wife because he had custody, and was trying to find out where she was bringing them to school and to church. Mark claimed he had figured out where they were going to school, and since his ex-wife lives in Carlsbad and they previously attended the Ramona campus, he deduced she may be bringing the kids to Carlsbad campus. So he arrived to see if this was true. Once he figured out the school and church locations, he intended to inform the court as part of his case against her.

He also claimed he had custody and brought in his custody paperwork, which appeared completed except without a judge’s signature. He claimed the signed copy was at his sister’s farther south in San Diego and he didn’t have time to go get it and still make it to church in time (and couldn’t do it another day due to work). The paperwork said he had weekend custody and Stephanie has in-week custody. (comment: he seemed surprised that Kevin recognized the paperwork wasn’t complete. Was he caught in a lie or really didn’t realize this mattered? His claim of where the paperwork was seemed potentially made-up).

Throughout the interaction, Mark was polite, professional, and compliant. He was well dressed in slacks and an open collar, button down shirt. He did not appear to be on any substances and was not belligerent.

Mark W & Kevin on the safety team told Mark his kids weren’t there at that time (which was true), took Mark’s name, phone, and kids names down and said that if we were legally allowed to give him any more details about kids’ attendance, we would contact him. He appeared thankful, shook our hands, left the church peacefully, and drove away with no incident.

Mark and his ex-wife Stephanie Hopkins (also goes by Daze) have previously attended the Ramona campus, with some disputes occurring there. Stephanie and the children are in Rock. TJ is tracking these disputes. TJ, Brette Sterk, and Lindsay (at a minimum) are aware of Stephanie’s side of the story who claims Mark is abusive and is or has been on drugs. Mark is apparently enrolled in a life group at Carlsbad.

Lindsay, Russ, Mark, & Kevin spoke to TJ to see if there was a history of violence or disturbance in Ramona. He said there were heated arguments but no violence.

We spoke to Tim who said he would contact each of them to try and determine actually custody arrangements, decide what controls might need to be put in place to keep them apart at church, and notify church staff of those controls.
