Incident Report / Actions Taken by Team Members
K1-Cove and Studio 2/3 combined classes for the Sunday 5PM service, so it was the same classroom for kindergartners to 3rd grade. At the very end of service when parents were already starting to pick up their children, safety was requested to respond to Studio 2/3. The K1-Cove teacher, Cassie, told us two kids were arguing about a ball and one choked the other. Joseph House (Kindergarten) two-handed choked Jack Brooks (2nd grade) and slapped the right side of his face. I talked to Jack and he said he was okay. Jack said he could breathe fine and nothing hurt anymore. His neck and his right cheek were slightly red. I took a photo of his neck and face. As I was checking on Jack, Joseph’s dad was picking him up and I heard one of the other teachers talking to him about the incident. I heard his dad say something to the effect of he is going through some tough times at home. I’m not 100% sure, but I do believe dad is a recovering drug addict and is dealing with a divorce. Cassie told Jack’s parents about the incident. Once all the kids were picked up, I talked to Cassie and told her to have a conversation about this to the Children’s Pastor Ashley Hufferd. I explained some different options from having a simple conversation with Joseph before class to having his dad or even a counselor stay in class with Joseph during service. Cassie was unaware of any history of violence with Joseph, but one of the volunteers thought there may have been some issues with him recently.
I believe the kids are young and small enough that the Sunday school staff or volunteers would easily be able to break up any further altercations, but do think it should be formally addressed with Joseph’s dad once there is a game plan between Cassie and Ashley. Pickup was pretty hectic, so the conversations were brief.
