Incident Report / Actions Taken by Team Members
At approximately 11:10 am, one of the parking volunteers approached Kathryn Weinrich to notify a staff of a potential fire in the parking lot. Kathryn found the house manager who notified me by radio of a potential fire “out back”. Kerry (medical) also heard the call.
The two of us saw each other in the side hallway. I asked Kerry to find a fire extinguisher and meet me out back. On my way out the back door I link up with Lindsay (on staff). We started looking for the fire but didn’t see any indications. I asked for a more precision location via radio when I was told the NW corner of the parking lot, that a member had gone to the skating rink, and I may need to help him.
Kerry, Lindsay and I met at the NW corner with a member and her daughter. They told me two kids had been trying to light a fire in a concrete planter and that they had confronted them. They told the kids to stop and helped the kids extinguish the fire and empty the container. Rich, husband/father of the members, had then taken the kids to the ice rink next door to find their parents. (Kids were killing time while their respective parents were watching siblings play hockey. The two families had no known affiliation with NCC)
Lindsay, Kerry, and I looked at the fire location and found no damage and no risks.
I started to walk to the ice rink to assist Rich, but he was already returning to North Coast. Rich told me he had brought the kids to their parents at the rink, told the parents what happened. Rich was happy that the parents seemed appropriately concerned and intended to control the kids, so he departed.
Rich joined Lindsay, Kerry, his wife & daughter, and me and we walked back to NCC.
The members had confiscated two lighters, which they gave to me. They were standard BBQ lighters with no apparent danger so I threw them away.
No injuries, no property damage, no obvious risk of kids returning.
